Major Long Duration Heatwave, Through Next Week, Monsoon Also Arrives

Now that we’ve had some very unusual late June rainfall, Summer is going to give isn’t just going to give us a taste of what it can produce… rather a feast.

Yep, I forgot to edit the website information on my own graphic template. But it's not really needed since you're already where you need to be!

Beginning Friday, a string of 100+ degree temperatures for much of the lower elevations is expected to begin as a strong, very hot ridge sets up over Nevada and Utah, rotating some very warm mid-level temperatures into the west coast. Friday, temperatures in the valley will likely range from 100 – 105, and over the weekend, upwards of 110 as 850mb temperatures soar to 25c+.

By Monday through at least Wednesday, inland low elevation temperatures are expected to climb to 108 – 118 degrees, as 850mb temperatures overhead bake up to around 30 – 35c, with 700mb temperatures upwards of 20c! Even 500mb temperatures will be over 0c, in fact, possible reaching 3 – 7c… which is extraordinary, as with more modest heatwaves, 500mb temps even remain below 0c.

100 degree plus temperatures are currently forecast to linger through at least Thursday, before a possible trough rolls into the Pacific Northwest cooling us off quite a bit.

During this long, extreme heatwave, I expect there to be some struggles with the power supply across California due to a massive surge in AC usage by millions of people during the day… and even into the night due to there being little relief overnight as temperatures only lower into the upper 70s to low or even mid 80s.

Another big thing during this heatwave will be the monsoon. Mountain thunderstorms will likely become a daily event beginning Friday afternoon in the southern sierra, creeping northward through the weekend into early next week, covering the entire mountain range into the Oregon Cascades. The larger swath of monsoonal convection is forecast to continue through Friday, give or take a day depending on the arrival of a cool down/trough. The ECMWF is the most aggressive with the monsoon during the middle portion of the week, introducing convection even into the valley on Wednesday. This is still a week out, so I’ll preclude from going into much more detail for now… however, if this trend continues and additional models follow suite, expect additional blog updates in the coming days regarding mainly the monsoonal standpoint of the ridge.

Mapped out the mountain monsoon thunderstorm chances for the weekend into next week. May have to include the valley in there if some models continue to insist.
